Kate Alger is inspired by woodlands, open water, sad dogs and beautiful things. Her work balances fine detail with plenty of negative space. She strives to capture both the likeness and the soul of her subject matter. All of Kate’s work is created entirely by hand. Kate’s recent sugar-lift etchings combine delicate, painstaking painterly stopping out whereas her recent monotypes have introduced a sense of urgency and intuitive mark-marking alongside areas of delicate detail. Pewley Down Hedgerows elevates the often-overlooked and celebrates the feeling of protection and freedom that this protected space near the heart of Guildford offers. Winter Reset is an ode to all the special wild places where we can go to reset ourselves when we need it most. Serene on the Surface is a nod to Kate's experience of motherhood. East Head I celebrates the little oasis of calm of the salt marches next to the wild open beach at West Wittering. Jack and On the Prowl are sensitive portraits of rescue animals, waiting to be rehomed. Kate is passionate about how important it is to create with our hands and the sense of community that can be created through in-person sessions so runs regular workshops focussing on art-for-wellbeing. Kate Alger’s artwork is held in private collections and has been featured in specialist press.
