Unique Work

Andy Thornley's work expresses the differing moods of the landscape through its drama and contrasts. Drawing on his previous background as Professor of Urban Planning at the LSE he is interested in the way social and economic factors shape the landscape today. He works from bases in London and Wales. His recent work has focussed on two themes. The steelworks at Port Talbot and the drama created by the contrast between the industrial buildings and the emissions of smoke and steam. Underlying this are uncomfortable social and environmental dilemmas. The network of holloways in the foothills of the Black Mountains. In this case the contrast is between the darkness in the overshadowed canopies and brightness when light breaks through. The tracks evoke memories of the people who have journeyed along them over the centuries. He has attended a number of art courses in London including at the Royal Drawing School, City Lit and Central St Martins. These courses included ones on monoprint, lithography and etching. Recent work has been selected for Exhibitions with the Derwent Drawing Prize (2020), The Pastel Society (2021), and The Wales Contemporary (2019, 2020, 2022).
