John Angus - artist, curator, and researcher - based in Lancaster in north west England. “Indeterminate Portraits and Busts” This series of indeterminate portraits, paintings and busts, are derived from details of black and white reproductions in art history books of photographs of rooms in aristocratic houses, including Versailles. In each case the sitter is not identifiable, negating the original function. Such portraits are common in grand historic houses. They exemplify the symbolic role of art in the promotion and maintenance of social and economic power structures. As a print maker I am interested in the reproduction of images in print on paper. Each print in this series is the result of a series of reproductions using different media, starting from paint or marble, to photography, half-tone screening, black and white off-set litho printing, digital scanning, digital manipulation, and finally screen-printing in colours.
