Lucy Cooper creates screenprints which evoke memories of much-loved places or moments of reflection. She explores uplifting and sometimes unexpected combinations of colour and pattern to reinterpret familiar sights in a semi-abstract or minimalist style. The starting point of her process is invariably a photograph that Lucy has taken, which she then works on digitally: deconstructing, reinterpreting, simplifying, and playing with composition and colour. She then introduces hand-drawn marks, blocks of colour and other abstract elements, often discarding most of the original photographic reference. The screenprinting process itself both informs and develops the work, encouraging her to strip back and simplify the subject and to focus on the interplay of colours, shapes and negative spaces. Lucy has exhibited in a number of galleries and group exhibitions in London and Brighton and shows her work at Chalk Gallery in Lewes. In 2022 she exhibited as a guest Artist in Focus at Southbank Printmakers and has had prints selected for their Miniprint competition for the past three years. Two of her prints were selected for the ‘Towards the Light’ Exhibition in Brighton in 2022, and she has had work selected for the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in both 2021 and 2022.
