Sevin Fortier’s work explores the fragile and fleeting nature of human consciousness and complex facets of emotions, such as shame or loneliness. Fortier’s work is imbued with an uncomfortable tension and words left unsaid. The viewer is invited to enter an enigmatic otherworld to explore the relationships between human figures and mysterious ‘other’ beings. Viewers may recognise their own feelings of discomfort and find meaning in the work through the lens of their own emotional experience. The pieces presented here are a part of Fortier’s recent attempts to interpret her dread of existence - that very human urge to find meaning. The immediacy of monotype affords Fortier the ability to make gestural marks that reflect what she calls ‘the terror and regret’ of mortality. The single print that emerges from this process aptly signifies the nature of ephemerality that so preoccupies Fortier. Fingerprints and smudges occasionally appear and are integral to the images. Fortier graduated from the University of the West of England with a BA in Illustration (2006) and has been an award winning illustrator and animator.
