Scott Baxter’s work explores LGBTQ+ identity through photography and printmaking. Baxter (he/him) is an artist who explores queer identity, performativity and imagery where digital technologies are now an everyday part of identity creation. He responds to historical, and current, queer (in)visibility by subverting understandings of familiar social allegories to create altered contexts for queer realities and agency to exist. For the past 2 years Baxter has focused on developing his skills in silkscreen printing and CMYK separation photo-plate lithography. Submitted to WCPF 2023 are a set of lithographs depicting narratives that respond to western cultural allegories repositioned in a queer context. The works depict the temporalities of bodies in action, bodies in transition and the evanescent experiences of touch. His work is a collaborative process that incorporates dialogues with the sitter to produce narrative images personal to the sitter but open to interpretation by the viewer. Baxter graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2015 with a first-class honours degree in Intermedia Art. At ECA he received the ECA Scholarship and ECA Research Award, The Barns-Graham Travel Award to Italy and the Katherine Michaelson Prize for Dissertation Writing. In 2023 he received a Creative Scotland VACMA to develop his lithography research. Baxter’s work has been exhibited at: ARCUS Pride Exhibition 2021, London; RSA: New Contemporaries, Royal Scottish Academy, 2016; and New Scottish Artists at DRAF / Fleming Collection, 2016. His work features in UN//TITLED, Anthology of Queer Art 2016-2020, John Hopper Publishing, London and Inspirational Art Magazine, London, Issue 61, 2022. Baxter’s work is held in the public collection of Aberdeen Galleries and Museums, Scotland and private collections in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Canada and the USA.
