Véronique Chance’s work explores the representation of the body and its relationship to performance, documentation, technology and the embodied dynamics of spectatorship, in which the activity of running plays a key part. Running enables her to engage with endurance through an activity is self-governed, solitary and physically demanding. Live streaming, tracking devices and reproductive media, along with running become methods and tools for examining a sense of place and for reconsidering relationships between live performance and documentation in an age of the technologically mediated image. On the 31st May 2021, Chance began the live artwork and run Thames Run: Source to Sea. Over 14 days she followed the length of the river from Kemble in Gloucestershire to the Isle of Grain in Kent. Audiences could track her movements live online using GPS, live streaming and social media. Each evening she wrote a blog entry to record what had taken place. During 2022 she transformed this work into a multi-media installation of overlapping sound, printed images and text emphasising the mediated and reproductive nature of the work. Chance studied Printmaking at the RCA and completed a PhD at Goldsmith’s College in 2013. She is recognised nationally and internationally through solo and group exhibitions, curated events, talks, presentations and through commissions and published material.
