Unique Work

Nolan Price works within ceramics, painting and print. His work toys with figuration, though often settles in places outside of direct and immediate identification. The artist talks of wishing the works to feel as though they are in the act of emerging - of being open to various interpretations. Nolan recently spent five years in Japan where his work underwent a shift, and previous references to Abstract Expressionism opened up to Gutai. Gesture and movement drive practice, along with shadow, space and the nurturing of imperfection. Movement was pivotal in the creation of these prints. Nolan was referencing sports photojournalism and the dynamism and suggestion contained within. The use of carborundum printing, where a fine sand is applied to a swiftly worked drawing in glue, allowed for time to stand still in a similar manner to the act of snapping the picture in photography. The different stages of making allowed for multiple readings to be be brought to bear, initial abstract mapping evokes states of mind and thoughts in process, whilst later worked-over prints move toward clear representation.
