In her almost two decades of printmaking experience, Shokoufeh has been inspired by her surroundings. “From the Homeland Series”, created post immigration to England, is the sequel of her artworks with trees as their main subject. Adding old buildings to the trees depicts the change she’s been going through both in terms of her individuality and what her homeland is experiencing now. The loneliness and ambiguity of the trees and their surroundings is believed to showcase an imposed void space. These new elements are trying to seize a moment that creates wider images in the audience’s mind. They are tiny windows to a scene much larger than themselves. They focus on a brief moment in time which connects us to the texture and details of everydayness and recurring emotions. Creating numerous grey tunes using acid application helped express a paradoxical feeling caused by a garden of trees where life and death co-exist. The extra intentional focus on the details tries to reveal the painful price her people have paid to achieve even the ordinary. Her works show the ceaseless attempt to seek the light. They aspire the life once existed in the ruins and hope for the change they deserve.
