Jack Williams
£0.00
Jack Williams’ work combines both history and popular culture with the ancient artform of woodcut printmaking.
Working under the name Zealous Alchemy, Williams’ approaches printmaking from his own unique perspective. Initially designing his prints digitally, he then uses either gampi or acetone to transfer the design onto wood. He then carves the wood with a mixture of both Western and Japanese tools. He embraces both tradition and innovation – respecting the old ways, but also utilising modern advances where appropriate.
Williams’ largest and most intricate undertaking thus far is the woodcut ‘The Great Arab Revolt (1916-1918)’. This piece, depicting a Bedouin camelry charge during The Great War, was born from Williams’ desire to create a print based on World War One, yet showing a very different theatre of battle to that which is often seen in the West. The events of The Great Arab Revolt are now rarely mentioned, yet their impact can be seen to this day.
Williams is currently studying his final year in Art Practice BA(Hons) at West Suffolk College.
He recently had his work exhibited at Ipswich Printweek 2023.
