Gabriella Kardos
£0.00
Gabriella Kardos is a London based painter and printmaker. She was born in Bucharest, emigrated to Canada in 1976 and came to the UK on an artist’s visa in 1993. Kardos uses the zinc plate to etch into or engrave or paint with acid - a fluid combination between painting and a sculpted drawing. Her subject matter is made of memories, people and personal biography. It takes time to discover a memory or a photograph she would want to explore, her aim being to capture a feeling, to bring a memory to life, to express something very human inside of us. Kardos is not interested in the surface of things, but in what lies beneath, a human element which endures through time. Sometimes her images come to life in an instance, almost by magic, while at other times she struggles through many iterations to find the right expression, thus using a lot of erasure through scraping and burnishing and then proceeding with new markings in the hope of finding that elusive expression which feels right and keeps moving - a kind of inner mobility within a state of immobility, that which is felt or spoken without uttering a word.
