KATE SADLER INTERIORS | CAMBRIDGE DEVELOPMENT

5 APARTMENTS IN TRADITIONALLY DECORATED VICTORIAN BUILDING

For visiting fellows from America (scientists). Kitchens from Devol, bedroom wallpapers from William Morris. Opposite the Leys school and along from the Botanic Gardens

To give a Cambridge feel. Open to options of something a bit unexpected and bolder in the entrance hall – more abstract. Images in the £100s rather than £1000s

Client likes the work of early 20thC Artist, Eric Ravilious. Gentle, thoughtful, landscapes, gardens, botanical, calm, Bloomsbury colours

entrance hall

A striking, possibly abstract work c. 110 x 90cm to sit above a console. To be impactful, inviting, give a sense of what to expect through the rest of the visual journey, i.e. referencing history of space/place; Willima Morris/decorative motifs etc.

Suggested - Eleanor May Watson or Jake Garfield. Former - bright domestic abstracts inspired by early 20th moquettes like Eric Ravilous. Latter, Jake plays with the idea of fine art and decorative art, always utilising aspects of decorative motifs by William Morris in the background of his contemporary works. His work is also held at the Fitzwilliam Museum which is lovely link to local heritage.

KITCHENS

Interesting spaces to hang and engage with works of art. In a kitchen/dining area often works to spark conversation of sensory pieces to think of nourishment for body and brain. I’ve identified key areas - dining area main wall: one larger landscape or 3x smaller pieces (i.e. Johanna Muriel) to hang where the light falls. Spaces below the light fittings either side of front/window wall. 2x small pieces (one above the other) on the boxed pipping area above work top (possibly Bobbye Fermie who really reflects that 1930s calm domestic setting)

Bedrooms

William Morris papers. We don’t want to have anything too decorative or may get lost. Possibly complete contrast. Depending where mirrors going. Alcoves lovely. To identify exact placement to ensure no rehanging required because of wallpaper.

Living Area

Living room under renovation with a small silver step ladder, construction tools, a black radiator, built-in shelves, and a fire extinguisher near the wall.

Large image to hang between wall lights. Possibility to hang on picture chains from picture rail to reflect the decorative/heritage aspect. Something calming and colourful like Katherine Jones or Yuki Scholl would work beautifully here.
