Yulya Pakalina (born in Moscow, Russia) is an artist and lecturer at Morley College London. In her work, she plays with female body image and symbolism to create thought-forms
Coming from a fashion background, I have gradually shifted to an art practice focused on the female body image and the diverse meanings attached to it. By playing with the feminine body and symbolism inspired by medieval art, alchemy, and witchcraft, I create thought-forms and narratives that explore womanhood in general, as well as my personal experience of being a woman.
My imagination and urge for creation are primarily driven by my vulnerable side. I translate my inner feelings, fears, and dreams into visual metaphors using textile techniques, printmaking, and elements of sculpture and moving image. Through figurative prints, abstract mark-making, shaping clay, and fabrics, I tell my stories. These stories are imbued with mysteries discovered through self-contemplation and come alive through meticulous tactile dialogue with the chosen media.
Each medium offers a unique way to express different facets of my narratives. Working with both figurative and abstract image-making allows me to convey complex themes of femininity and personal history while maintaining the subconscious, intuitive aspect of my art. Working with textiles and sculpture keeps me present in the physicality and earthiness of womanhood.
My goal is to contribute to nourishing and shaping the collective imagination, inviting those who see my work to reconnect with their sensitive side, where they can explore their own vulnerabilities and dreams alongside mine.
