Tara Chittenden is a woodblock printmaker who blends Japanese printmaking traditions with her own innovative techniques. Tara’s creative process utilises wood blocks as surfaces for carving and for experimenting with ink. By layering translucent colours, she achieves an optical interplay of hues and textures, enhancing the subtle quality of her prints. Through this fusion of traditional methods and experimentation, Tara strives to evoke the transformation of wild landscapes under ever extreme light and weather conditions. Tara has submitted prints from two current series which use the languages of woodblock to evoke the essences of Arctic landscapes. One series explores the ethereal quality of changing light across ice cliffs, each print reflecting the subtle shifts in temperature and their profound impact on polar environments. The second series plays with the mysterious depths of Arctic waters at night, employing deep blues and hidden ice to evoke a sense of stillness. Working in monoprints and in sets of variable editions allows the prints room to evolve in concert with the changing light and conditions she observes. Tara has exhibited her work at a number of shows, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2020, 2021, and 2022, and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2022.
