Statement & Practice Hovering between representation and abstraction, Krystina STIMAKOVITS’s works act as springboards for stirring contrasting moods and our imagination. Doodles drawn accompanying some Jazz tracks may serve as a starting point for one of STIMAKOVITS’s images, or it may be the encounter of a particular constellation of lines and shapes during her walks that have touched her psyche. The original concept will undergo several transformations during a series of sketches which involves her paring down or adding elements until she feels satisfied. Transferred onto a katsura, shina or magnolia block the design will then be cut and printed by hand using barrens and wooden spoons. The process usually involves some experimentation with ink mixes and overprinting using two or more blocks. STIMAKOVITS’s woodcuts are either bold and striking with energy, or fine and subtly layered evoking mediative moods. In both cases, her imagery defy the obvious with a capacity to illicit diverging interpretations and responses. Description of artworks The works presented here are (limited editions of 8) woodcuts executed either in mono or two or more colours. They have been printed by hand on archival, acid free Japanese papers (Bukoshi 70 gsm, Shoin Bis 40gsm and Mitsumata 60 gsm). The prints come in A3, A2 and slightly larger sizes.
