Mary Claire has a degree in Fine Art, and postgraduate qualifications in Printmaking and Illustration from Central Saint Martins, where she won a number of awards, including the Cecil Collins Prize for Print.
Her work engages with the complexities inherent in the human's place within the natural world, with a particular focus on climate breakdown.
Her printmaking starts with hand-drawn marks on paper: applying ink with pen, brush and cloth, creating a landscape of repetitive lines and tones. Woodgrain texture and cuts are often used as a backdrop before screenprinted drawings are added.
Mary Claire’s practice is rooted in a sense of place achieved through drawing, using repeat sketches of a subject made outdoors through considered observations of a landscape. She responds to the atmospheres and feelings conjured up by her surroundings—remaining mindful that we are all in and of nature—and spends time contemplating the shapes and rhythms of natural forms.
