Emily Weiskopf’s work aims to uncover a process of seeing, both in physical and metaphysical states where the final outcomes exist between things, remaining open to the unconscious to occupy a liminal space between ancient and nascent. She works in a diverse array of mediums.
This print series of a wave forms represent the vibrations of our thoughts and feelings as they translate deciphering the abstract the world. They pose new perspectives, a way of looking for connection, and understanding our unconscious self. Form is flattened then dimensional, color is soft, yet bold to engage in transformation and depth. Contradictions are used to speak to an ongoing feeling of an unfolding navigation. A car crash, a chronic illness which impacts and alter my brain, eyes, hands.. continues to reshape my every day life. These works speak to this experience. Making sense of, staying afloat and trying to make light in a confusing, new paradox of reality in an ever changing world.
The wave patterns were hand drawn then made them into polymer plate blocks, inked and printed to create an embossment. Afterwards, I hand-cut, score, fold, and collage the printed elements until I recognize the lines transforming into familiar, yet abstracted low-relief images, or messages. The added drawing elements activate the original starting point of departure, the gesture that sparked the return to my own experiences. Each work is one of a kind.
Born in NY. Weiskopf graduated from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia PA with an MFA in Printmaking. She was finalist for the Rome Prize and has been awarded numerous fellowships and residencies. Weiskopf’s work is included in public and private collections.
