Glyn Newman's work is a response to the perpetually recurrent and regenerative force of nature and its relationship to human experience. His images express the vigour of pollination, seeding, growth and decay, alongside reference to traces of human existence. His visual language is indebted to pictograms in ancient writing systems, comics, biomorphic surrealism and automatic drawing. He deploys a gestural graphic language that creates ambiguity around the distinctions between the man-made and the natural environment. In this series of polymer plate etchings, Newman works from observational drawings, photographs and memory onto transparent drawing surfaces, using a range of tusche media and drawing implements. The resulting images are imbued with a quiet sense of panic, of the tragi-comic, and of hope. Newman graduated from Birmingham College of Art in 1986 and Chelsea College of Art in 1991. He has recently returned to practice as a painter and printmaker after a teaching career in Art History. His most recent exhibitions include Galerei Heike Arndt, Mini-Maxi Open, Berlin (2019); Greenhill Arts Open, Moretonhampstead, Devon (2019); and Manhattan Graphics Centre, Miniprint Open, New York (2019). His work is held in private collections in the UK and Europe.
