Gabriella Kardos is a London based painter and printmaker. She was born in Romania during its Communist regime, emigrated to Canada in 1976 and came to the UK on an artist’s visa in 1993. Her subject matter is made of memories, people and personal biography which come together enveloped in feelings and ideas. When these end up on her printing plates they become anybody's life, dealing with universal questions of existence. Kardos has developed a unique method of chine-collé in which the way she paints on the 'China' paper, superimposed during the process of printing, has its own logic, adding another layer to the mood and even ideas of her images, rather than faithfully filling in the colours of what is portrayed. In this dialogue between etching/drypoint and painting Kardos shifts the outcome of the final image into a more subtle and complex perception of the image.
