Ben Topping explores the temporality of built structures, bridging art and archaeology through visual and material creations.

Topping specialises in acid etching to capture eroded buildings of the past. His etchings are conceptually connected to ruins due to the degradation the zinc plate goes through when submerged in acid, mirroring the weathering of man-made sites and structures. Topping investigates traditional processes alongside contemporary experimentations, aiming to push the boundaries of representation and develop techniques to replicate the textures of heritage sites across the South of England, including Corfe Castle, Portchester Castle, and Titchfield Abbey.

In 2023, Topping graduated from MA Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School. He is now a Print Fellow at the City and Guilds print workshop.

Topping was shortlisted for the Clifford Chance Postgraduate Printmaking in London 2023 award and exhibited in Clifford Chance, Canary Wharf earlier this year.

Recent exhibitions include ‘Unknown Territory’ at SET Lewisham, ‘Boiling Point’ at Openhand Openspace in Reading, and ‘Second Breakfast’ at the Winchester Gallery.

Topping is represented by Artiq.
