Paulina Sandberg (Sweden/Scotland, born 1973) trained at Edinburgh College of Art and works across sculpture, drawing, digital media and printmaking. In her practice Paulina looks at how we understand what we encounter, often taking her own experiences as starting point to look closer at situations that reflect how we negotiate an understanding of ourselves and our place in the environment through our senses. With a playful approach to materials and techniques and a focus on texture and tactility, her work reflects an interest in the natural environment and social conditioning, making sense of traditions and gender roles in an evolving social landscape. Recent work in sculpture explores themes of body image, objectification and desire associated with maternity and child birth, shown at a solo exhibition last year at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Paulina has exhibited in the UK and internationally, most notably with work shown in ‘Privacy – A Programme of Symposia’ curated by the German artist Olaf Nicolai and the Henry Moore Foundation, ‘OK, OKAY’ at St. Andrews Museum and ‘Research’ at the Royal Scottish Academy. She was invited to The Royal Scottish Academy Gilles Artist Residency at Hospitalfields and has created community projects and public artworks for Midlothian Women’s Aid. The Solitude/Enforced Relaxation project was initiated at an artist residency on the Greek island of Evia, exploring desires and expectations of belonging and solitude connected to motherhood and migration. The project grew to include drawing installation, photography and printmaking.
