Nanying Zhu is a visual artist who graduated from the University of the Arts London MA Fine Art: Printmaking and currently based in London and China. Nanying’s work focuses on the identity of individuals in a cross-cultural and cross-territorial context. She is concerned with the intense fuzziness, diversity and uncertainty felt by individuals on the issue of identity in the context of the highly homogenised contemporary urban culture. She also explores the blurring of the private and the public in urban space. Her practice is rooted in long-term observation and documentation of the human environment and everyday life. The strong sense of disconnection and lostness she feels while travelling to and from foreign countries and hometowns is a constant motivation for her work. Through exploring the print, drawing, photo and video, she stands at the 'border' to re-describe the reality of the world. The work "Halo" is a series of works created during the last two years of her in London. Her practice in recent years has been built around natural and urban landscapes, connecting them with personal experiences and emotions, such as the imaginary homes and unreachable pasts.
