Jo Haskins is a contemporary artist currently based in Pays de la Loire. She was born in Cambridge and has spent her life shared between England and France. She is a painter and printmaker whose current practice is inspired by her feelings of freedom and connection experienced when immersed in the landscape of Svalbard in the High Arctic. Her recent work is a result of kayaking and trekking expeditions in Svalbard and an artist residency in Longyearbyen, at the Spitsbergen Artists Center. She explores the discovery of place and responds to her emotions experienced in such a powerful and yet fragile landscape. She aims to portray the wonder, quietness and magic witnessed in the vast, infinite space and the feeling of the constantly moving and ever-changing environment. She synchronises the techniques of painting and printmaking, allowing the two processes to inform each other. She is drawn to the interaction of colours and shapes when immersed in the landscape. Haskins hopes to bring the spirit of place to the viewer, inviting them to connect and appreciate the power and strength of nature and to reflect on its uncertain outcomes.
