George is primarily a painter and works predominantly in oil as well as other media on traditional gesso panel and found substrates. His work draws from personal experience, touching on themes including trauma, isolation, love, loss, desire for emotional attunement verses need for autonomy. Until a few years ago George’s work was figurative, punctuated by small, photorealistic elements that stood out against sparse, flat backgrounds - as if collaged. More recently however, he has sought a freer, more gestural and nuanced means of expression and as such - for the time being - has redefined his visual language in abstraction. George has also begun exploring monotype, enjoying its versatility, immediacy and air of unpredictability. He finds the art form an interesting precursor to painting. George grew up in Herefordshire on the Welsh borders and graduated from Falmouth College of Art, Cornwall in 2008 with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art. Following George’s immediate success on graduating - becoming one of 7 shortlist artists and the subsequent winner of a coveted award comprising a year’s occupancy of a large space at Krowji Studios in Cornwall, and exhibitions in two of the West Country’s most prominent galleries, The Newlyn Gallery and Anima Mundi (formerly Millennium Gallery), his career since has included numerous group and artist-led shows as well as 3 further solo exhibitions. He has done 3 European artist residencies; 2 at Cyprus College of Art in the village of Lemba, near Paphos and one in rural Sweden. As well as Cornwall, George has lived and worked in Bristol, Somerset, Brighton and briefly, Berlin. Since 2021 he has been based in London.
