Clare Grossman’s work focuses on an essential energy, the essence of a chosen subject or place. Acknowledging the precarious issue of climate change and its effects on our natural environment, her art celebrates beauty, the strength & vitality of our natural surroundings, especially the power of trees and their necessity for our very survival. Working initially from places visited and remembered, she records with many drawings an understanding her subject. The Jacobs Ladder series derives from a found composition of Pine trees which created an optical 'ladder'. The resulting works aim to encompass the spirit of the natural world with an impression of strong vertical growth towards the skies. This, and the biblical connotations which suggest the ladder acting as a bridge between heaven and earth has interested the artist on a personal level and has become a main theme of recent works.  The resulting prints often use a combination of both etching and monotype methods in order to achieve ‘one off’ individual pieces which reveal a journey of experimental mark making, harnessing elements of chance, accompanied by a practice derived by detailed attention to intaglio techniques. Clare attained her Masters of Arts in Fine Art Printmaking from Camberwell School of Arts and has won the Intaglio Printmaker Prize, the Ben Uri Museum Printmaking Prize & The Artist Magazine Prize. Her artwork has been commissioned and acquired by various corporate organisations & national institutions including BUPA Contemporary Art Collection, The Victoria & Albert Museum, Scarborough Museum, Claridges, Langham London, Art UK, Lansdowne Club Mayfair, Princess Noura University & the King Abdula University of Science & Technology in Saudi Arabia. She is based in London where she has a studio and also prints at the Artichoke Print Workshop in Brixton. This year, in 2024 she was Artist in Residence with the Edinburgh Printmakers, Scotland.
