Working in relief print using the traditional techniques of wood engraving and woodcut, Neil Bousfield’s practice explores the landscape narrative of the North Norfolk coast near his home. Drawing from a personal connection to these places, his layered prints capture the poignant interplay between nature, time, and impermanence. His wave woodcuts reflect the ongoing impact of coastal erosion, sea surges, and rising sea levels on Norfolk villages situated on the edge of the coast. The image of a large wave, a symbol of both power and persistence, serves as a metaphor for the enduring challenges faced by coastal communities as they contend with an uncertain future shaped by climate change. Bousfield was born in Middlesbrough and now lives and works on the Norfolk coast. He studied at Bristol’s University of the West of England where he gained a Master of Arts degree in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking, awarded with distinction in 2007. He is an elected member of The Society of Wood Engravers and a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). His work is held in notable collections including the National Art Library, V&A, London; the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Manchester Metropolitan University; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester.
