Yu Sun’s practice explores how images emerge through material negotiation. For her, printmaking is an open system—responsive to pressure, time, and resistance—where form arises through process, not prescription. Rooted in the Daoist idea of wu wei (non-action), she works with intaglio techniques involving rotation, repetition, and contact. Rather than control the image, she responds to where it begins to appear—letting material speak. Her selected work from the Variable Shoreline series sets a dark, textured field above a finely detailed ground. The paper’s absorbency and fibres shape the image as much as the plate, softening edges and drawing out subtle tonal shifts. The composition holds a quiet tension between weight and openness, inviting the viewer to move between material presence and spatial depth. Sun graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2025 with an MA in Print. She has exhibited at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2023, Southwark Park Gallery, and NOW Gallery. Her works are held in the collections of the Royal College of Art and private collectors, and she has delivered talks and tutorials at Norwich University of the Arts.
