Flavia Pinto explores and celebrates motherhood through monotypes, a painterly printmaking technique which produces one-off images. She takes inspiration from daily life to reflect on juxtaposing feelings within parenthood and recognises vulnerability and hardship as inextricable parts of that role. The monotype process allows for a spontaneous handling of the paint before printing - yet there is very little room for corrections afterwards: every image is a plunge into the unknown. To make images in this way feels all-consuming, vulnerable and sometimes unforgiving – akin to the experiences Flavia is exploring. In her most recent work, Flavia is exploring female divine archetypes and their meaning for contemporary motherhood. Seeking a union between the eternal and earthly elements, her images see mothers embodying religious and mythological goddesses to explore their modern significance. Flavia Pinto holds a BA Hons Drawing from Falmouth University. Her work is held in private collections across Portugal and the UK. She has recently exhibited at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2023), where she was shortlisted for the Boodle Hartfield Prize, and Blue Shop Galleries’ ‘Works on Paper 6’ (2024).
