Damien Borowik is a French artist based in London whose practice exists at the intersection of analog and digital media, between traditional crafts and emerging technologies. As a contemporary "plasticien," he builds bespoke drawing machines from scratch—some spanning two meters square—and develops custom algorithms that translate computational processes into physical marks, exploring the relationship between human intention, mechanical limitations, and the aesthetics of line-making automation. Central to Borowik's methodology is the belief that medium and message are inseparable. Through iterative development of both hardware and software, his drawing machines serve as mediators between digital computation and analog mark-making, creating works that emerge from programmed logic, material unpredictability, and the artist's own technical limitations. Through these truly unique processes, he investigates how automated systems can capture and transform natural forms, producing contemplative linear interpretations that invite sustained observation. For this exhibition, Borowik presents works exploring natural forms—trees, leaves, and organic growth patterns—through his drawing machine processes. These pieces demonstrate how automated mark-making can capture the essence of botanical structures, bridging traditional printmaking with contemporary digital fabrication. Borowik holds degrees from Central Saint Martins, UAL and Goldsmiths, UoL. His work has been commissioned by institutions like the Southbank Centre, Tate Modern, Somerset House and companies such as BBC Worldwide, Samsung Electronics and Lexus. Some of his work is held in permanent collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Christian Dior Couture and the Computer Art Society.
