Whether working in printmaking, installation, collage, or animation, drawing remains the foundation of Madeleine Wood’s practice. She understands drawing as a form of thinking—a way to process and make sense of her emotions. Memories, imaginings, and observations weave through her work, forming curious, layered narratives that unfurl across the page and out into the gallery space. Wood’s series of prints shown here were all made whilst on The Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School, from which Wood has recently graduated (Dec 2024). In three of the coloured works Wood pairs monotype with Tetra Pak etching cut-outs. Collaging painterly fluid gestures with sharply keen anthropomorphic characters that seem to act like ushers - uncanny narrators of the images. Wood graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2020. Her work has been exhibited most notably at Christies London, The Royal Drawing School, RSA New Contemporaries 2022, GENERATORprojects Dundee, Unit 1 Gallery London and at a solo show in Arusha Gallery, Edinburgh (Nov 23) and a work is also held by the Royal Collection Trust in their permanent collection.
