Inspired by the Seneca quote "we are waves of the same sea" and limiting himself to two variations of wave pattern, with every pull of the squeegee James Bristow is capturing moments of energy. Eschewing design and computerised perfection for a looseness and pure spontaneity, these one-off screenprints are built up from multiple layers, each a chance to further enhance - or, on a bad day, detract from - what's gone before. Minimal in form and process, generous in their use of colour, the physicality of looking at these prints is what is so unique about this series, you feel the motion and visual energy they give off. This is work to be experienced rather than explained, and rewards repeated viewing. A relative newcomer to the art of screenprinting, since discovering a joy in off-kilter repetition Bristow began to exhibit locally in Northamptonshire, followed in 2022 when 'Waves #11' was selected for the ING Discerning Eye.
