Luca Ortis’ work explores nature’s enigmatic power through an experimental, hands-on approach to photography and printmaking. Influenced by the atmospheric aesthetics of Pictorialism and the compositional techniques of Chinese landscape painting, his practice is also informed by decades of experience in traditional Japanese tattooing, where themes of folklore and symbolism naturally intersect with his visual language. Central to his process is the belief that photography can serve as a contemporary manifestation of animism—a way to capture the spirit and essence of natural subjects. Each photograph begins as a recognition of the life contained within a moment, but the image is only the starting point. Through the use of handmade paper, botanical toners, and experimental printing techniques, he manipulates and transforms each image, allowing material interactions and chance to guide the final outcome. The resulting works bear visible seams and imperfections, evoking the tactile, aged quality of artifacts and emphasizing their object-like presence. Recent exhibitions include the BBA Photography Prize at BBA Gallery in Berlin (May–June 2025), Echoes of Expression at Zari Gallery in London (May 2025), and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (November 2024).
