Through drawing and printmaking Ian Chamberlain reinterprets man-made structures as monuments in the landscape. These structures are architectural metaphors of past and current technological achievements. He has had a long-standing fascination with technology and architectural forms especially the structures within industry, agriculture, science and the military. By employing etching, a medium historically associated with architectural documentation, Chamberlain reinforces connections between past and present, drawing parallels between art, history, and technology. His research fosters an interdisciplinary dialogue across science, the humanities, and the visual arts. This investigation has led to the development of an upcoming body of work, Architecture of Enquiry, in which Chamberlain will conduct research within the Royal Astronomical Society archive under the expert guidance of Sian Prosser. This new project will delve into the archive’s collection of drawings, prints, and photographs, using them as a foundation for new work based on The Great Equatorial Telescope at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. A new body of work focusing on Humankinds natural sense of curiosity desire to know more. He exhibits widely both nationally and internationally, his drawings are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Tate Modern, London; Bristol Museum; Royal West of England Academy, Bristol; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; The University of Chichester collection, Victoria Gallery , Bath and Chippenham Museum.
