Shuiying Jing
Shuiying Jing is an artist and printmaker whose practice focuses on the relationship between power and the gaze, exploring how the body becomes a site of control and persuasion when observed. In her work To Be Seen, To Be Ruled, she depicts partial bodies—such as legs and gestures—through repetition, layering, and blurring, creating a tension between exposure and resistance. The figures on the page reveal the vulnerability of being watched, while the techniques of layering and concealment embody forms of subtle resistance and self-regulation. This approach resonates with the Daoist concept of “soft power,” positioning the image not only as an object of observation but also as a tool for reflecting on the dynamics of seeing and being seen.
Shuiying Jing holds a BA from the Beijing Film Academy, where she developed a solid foundation in narrative and visual language, and an MA in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in London, where she established her cross-media explorations between film and print. Her work has been exhibited widely in China and the UK, continually expanding the possibilities of print and moving image in contemporary contexts, emphasizing the intersections of power, memory, and embodied experience in visual storytelling.
