Richard Wise’s work is characterised by a painterly approach, developing abstract forms rooted in ongoing drawing studies of natural structures. Each print evolves through explorations of colour, composition, and spatial balance. A distinctive graphic aesthetic underpins the work, shaped by years of design practice and a deep understanding of both commercial and fine art printing processes. His prints reflect a careful balance between precise control and spontaneous, expressive mark-making. In his recent screen print series Green on Grey, forms emerge and recede through subtle layering of deep green hues—sometimes to the point of near invisibility—creating a delicate interplay of presence and absence. This invites the viewer to engage on both a macro and micro level, appreciating the tension between distance and detail. Richard holds an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from the Slade School of Fine Art. Since 1984, he has exhibited widely in independent galleries across the UK. Alongside his practice, he has lectured in printmaking, fine art, and graphic design, led workshops, and held artist residencies.
