Michaela Wheater’s work is concerned with the human condition and is made from a deep personal exploration of vulnerability. Animated portraits and theatrical, articulated figures, often unsettling are derived from drawings of herself, often with reference to her fascination with dolls. Her subject matter is arranged, manoeuvred and extensively recorded before being developed into print. Images from her current body of work depict figures held in suspended animation, adopting the awkwardness and the guise of the puppet she has owned since childhood. Mysterious and with ambiguous narratives Michaela is concerned about uncovering a truth in the moment of making. Michaela exhibits widely including Woolwich Contemporary, the Mall Galleries, Bankside Gallery, Ironbridge Fine Arts, the RBSA and recently a solo show in Whitstable.
