Karen Cunningham depicts a wide range of subjects in her work - ordinary objects, individuals, and street scenes she encounters – in order to provoke dialogue about community, culture, and conflict in interpersonal relationships. Karen’s work blends photography and various printmaking techniques to create fresh representations of her subjects. Cunningham’s recent series, Dominoes, Crayons, and Pick-up Sticks explores the moral lessons imparted in childhood through skill-based games and creative play, as seen from an experienced adult perspective. Cunningham combines photogravure with chine collé to create elegant and playful presentations of these familiar game objects, exploring themes of chance, consequences, and resilience represented in her fallen dominoes, broken crayons, and tangled pick-up sticks. This is an ongoing series. Cunningham graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in photography. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Economist magazines. Her print work has been featured in exhibitions and permanent collections, including Woolwich International Print Fair, Brooklyn Museum and The Museum of the City of New York.
