David Spiller's art is filled with life and energy, compressing a world of influences, ideas and impressions into printmaking. Spiller’s screenprints are a blend of styles, mixing the hard-hitting immediacy of Pop Art, with its bright colours, punchy text and clean lines, with a deceptively simple expressionism. Frequently featuring favourite cartoon icons, covered with freehand written lines from poetry, novels, and songs, such as Bruce Springsteen’s ‘If I Should Fall Behind’ and Gene Vincent’s rockabilly hit ‘Be Bop A Lula’, Spiller’s works are simultaneously fun and sincere, capturing the imagination of adults and children alike, with a characteristic romanticism and sentimentality running throughout all of his art. Since attending the Slade School of Art in 1962, Spiller has held solo exhibitions in over 10 countries, and is regularly exhibited by TAG Fine Arts, Portland Gallery, and Guy Pieters Gallery. Spiller has also exhibited at notable institutions including Mannheim Kunstverein, Germany (1987), Museum van Bommel van Dam (1992), and the Royal West of England Academy (2003).
