Alistair Gow hopes to create artwork which invites questions - What is happening here? What could go there? Why has the artist valued this object? How has this been made? The subjects in his pictures are built from Gow’s daily life: the commute to work or the school run, the artists he works with and the tools he uses. What draws him to a particular image is its potential to present a scene that is open to a viewer bringing their own story, a story that can change: billboards, pictures hanging on studio or gallery walls and trees are recurring motifs.
Beyond the conceptual interest, Gow is fascinated with the physical act of making. The practice of printmaking, particularly the process, craft, and community of a workshop, is essential to how he thinks about and makes art. Gow graduated with a BA(hons) in Painting and Printmaking from the Glasgow School of Art in 2010. In tandem with his own practice, he works at Glasgow Print Studio as a Master Printer, specialising in intaglio and relief printing.
