Alexandra Hobson is a London based artist and educator whose current prints, developed through gestural mark making and photography, work and rework multiple layers of colour and texture. Hobson’s recent set of screen prints continue an exploration of geometry through the compositional format of the square, a shape representing a perfect expression of two-dimensional space, of balance and precision. Screen print itself is characterised by the flatness of layers of colour, echoing the flat planes of the square/ cube. The opportunities/ limitations of the medium, encourage Hobson to create texture and tonal nuance within that structure. She first exhibited in Woolwich Print Fair in 2020. In 2023 she took part in WCPF Director’s Cut and won both the ‘Bainbridge Print Prize’ at the Bainbridge Print Open and the ‘Printmaking Today’ prize at RE Printmakers International Original Print Exhibition, which resulted in the ‘Artists Eye’ feature in Printmaking Today magazine, Vol 32, Issue 128. Hobson has worked with a range of improvisational musicians on portraits, album release artwork and flyers. Currently she is exploring photopolymer printmaking during her residency at Bainbridge Print Studios, developing a series of prints based on mark-making and photographic drawing, exploring the experiential nature of sound and movement.
