CYANOTYPE
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces images in distinctive shades of deep blue. The process involves coating paper or fabric with a light-sensitive solution and placing objects or transparencies on its surface before exposing it to ultraviolet light. Where light reaches the coated surface, a chemical reaction occurs, creating the characteristic blue tone.
After exposure, the material is rinsed in water, which washes away the unexposed solution and reveals the image. The result is a direct record of light and shadow, often marked by soft edges and tonal variation. Because the process responds directly to sunlight and exposure time, subtle shifts in intensity can alter the final image.
Cyanotype does not rely on a carved or incised plate; instead, the matrix is formed through contact and light. Each print captures a specific moment of exposure, and while editions can be produced, variations in light and handling may create slight differences between impressions.
