Engraving
The image is incised on a metal plate using a tool called a burin. The printmaker makes incisions into the metal at various angles and with varying pressure which dictates the quantity of ink the line can hold. Shading is traditionally rendered by multiple parallel lines or cross-hatching. This process is extremely strenuous due to the nature and strength of the material and was largely superseded by etching until modern technology made the process easier.
