Alison Bernal’s work is concerned with the formal elements of shape and form using architectural source material. She has used a number of techniques to explore the tension between the two-dimensional form of printmaking and three-dimensional imagery. This line of inquiry began with an investigation of Piranesi’s Carceri prints and developed to use the architectural elements of modern buildings. The relief prints on show have employed layers of printed translucent paper and collage to blur the lines between the print surface and the perceived image. Two print blocks are deployed to explore the possible variations. She trained at Middlesex University and Goldsmiths’ College and continued her studies in printmaking at Morley College.
