Richard Lawrence is a practising sculptor primarily working in wood, carving and constructing. His woodcut prints are a development from his sculpture, the material and the process. He will use off cuts from his sculpture making these are often blocks of oak, he finds the grain, splits and texture inspiring. The process of carving away, particularly on reduction prints he will use the same tools and thinking as his sculpture making. The subject matter is the same, the environment, animals and their habitat and the damage done by global warming. The expression of the subject in the printmaking the drawing involved on a flat surface helps the development of ideas which can then feed back in to his sculpture. Richard graduated from Wimbledon School of Art in 1982 and has had a studio in SE London since then, since 1995 he has had a studio at APT in Deptford where he was a founder member. He has fulfilled private and public commissions home and abroad and has wood carved sculptures in many local London parks. He has exhibited widely, in 2020 and 2021 he exhibited woodcut prints at the RA summer show.
