Kaija Kesa works with printmaking, the main themes are plants, insects and creation of garden. She uses butterflies and bees as a symbol of freedom and pure nature. Kesa combines different techniques as drypoint, photopolymer and mokulito. Kesa´s last series of prints depicting moth´s was born while the artist was preparing for an exhibition in Narva, Estonia, border town with Russia. Butterflies silent flight takes them across Estonia, through Russia and all the way to Ukraine, spilling light, hope and warmth that we so crave on these dark times. The artist dedicated the works to Ukrainian artist Oksana Stratiychuk, who taught her the mokulito technique the prints are made in. Kesa studied printmaking and interdiciplinar arts in Estonian Academy of Art. Since 2009 is leading a printmaking studio graafika.ee, organizes workshops and courses. Is a member of Estonian Artist Association and a member of board Estonian Printmakers Association. She has exhibited widely since 2000 in a number of solo shows and larger art projects. Highlights include, Varna Printmaking Biennale in Bulgaria in 2019, Estonian Contemporary Printmaking exhibition Wiiralt Prize in 2022, solo exhibition “Spread Wings” since 2020-2022 in different galleries in Estonia. Her work is held in many private and public collections including the National Gallery of Armenia, Club for UNESCO of Vicenza.
