'ULTRA' is a Berlin painting and print studio, shared by artist Sonia Brewin [alumna, The Slade, London] and designer Sven Mueller [alumnus, Hochschule der Kuenste, Berlin].
Bursting with bright colours and composed with pure forms, all works by ULTRA are recognisably joy-giving. The studio was founded on a belief that making art is life-affirming, and requires rigorous practitioner expertise and ongoing research.
This print series relies on 2 colours, with the white of the paper surface treated as a third. Before being hand-printed the image was digitally designed, using a dense warp and weft of diagonals, dashes and wave forms. It is the bodily motion of the viewer which gives these screen-prints their pictorial character, as either meticulous and fragmented, or as coalescing colourful surfaces.
In a nod to the work of Bauhaus artist Anni Albers, who in 1954 titled a piece 'Red and Blue Layers', prints in the series are named literally as 'Citrus Orange and Lavender Layers', 'Citrus Orange and Night Green Layers' or 'Raspberry and Bordeaux Layers'. A number of further ideas are advanced in this print series and sampled inspirations include, Agnes Martin, McArthur Binion and Xhosa textiles.
