Sachiyo Nishimura’s work focuses mainly on urban landscape and the photographic medium as a device to bring forward different methods of photomontage.
Her subjects of interest are those certain elements from the cityscape that appear to be ubiquitous and familiar, “non-places” that coexist silently within the urban context, looking quite similar to each other regardless of their specific location. By means of photography, these can be translated into purely graphic codes: lines and shapes contained within a flat surface. From here, the replicability and plasticity of the photographic medium enables Nishimura to take the image even further away from its original referent by re-articulating the graphic content under new structures.
The “Lines” series is based on photographic images of assorted wires and cables found dangling overhead in different cities around the world. Once photographed, these literally linear urban objects become simple graphic elements, like ink lines drawn on a blank paper. Nishimura experiments with several abstraction methods over their simplicity, aiming to unfold additional layers of visual complexity in her compositions.
She completed her MA Fine Arts in Central Saint Martins UAL in 2008, after graduating from a BA in Arts at PUC in Chile, 2001. Her work has been exhibited extensively both in group and solo shows, mostly in the UK and in Chile. Awards highlights include Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2008, DLA Piper Award 2009, Stan Smith Award by the London Group in 2011. She currently lives and work in London UK.
