John Angus’s recent screen-prints refer to the ownership of land, and are printed with mud.

Over the past few years Angus has been researching the history of landownership of a geographic east-west slice of north Lancashire, from sea coast to moorlands.

He has produced a series of prints based on small sections of nineteenth century tithe maps for the area. These maps show the names of the owner and occupier of every plot of land. The screen-prints are made with mud from the estuary of the river Lune, near where he lives, and the details both screen printed and hand-painted with gold acrylic.

John Angus is an artist, curator, and researcher based in Lancaster in north west England, who originally trained in biology.

He designed and screen-printed posters for arts events throughout the UK for many years. Later he was director of Storey Gallery in Lancaster which showed a contemporary art programme.

In 2014 he returned to printmaking, and has since exhibited widely including Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; National Original Print Exhibition; Wells Art Contemporary; Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair; and in China.

His work is in private and public collections including: V&A; Manchester Metropolitan University; and China Printmaking Museum.
