Julia Midgley is a printmaker and documentary artist
Editions of original prints are produced in her Cheshire studio.
Julia’s working practice is underpinned by observational drawing, line drawings using pen and ink or pencil.
Using traditional technology Julia makes use of her drawing practice to draw the image using aquatint to create tonal range. Whilst the plates are a platform for drawn images Julia embraces the accidents and unpredictablilty presented by printmaking.
Line quality is altered by the process.  Tonal areas ( aquatint ) often have more impact than those in original works on paper. This effect creates a welcome element of surprise often enhancing concepts and encouraging bolder image making.

The content of images comes from direct observation, recorded first in sketchbooks.  People, artefacts, reportage and world affairs, sometime juxtaposed together, all feature in this collection of resource material.  An underlying approach is that of the documentary artist bearing witness to current affairs and 21st Century life

Julia was a Reader in Documentary Drawing at Liverpool School of Art & Design until 2013;  past Vice President Manchester Academy Fine Art, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and Fellow of the Royal Watercolour Society.

Whilst she is a printmaker specialising in etchings with aquatint, Julia holds national awards for her drawings as well as those for printmaking.
She is also a professional Reportage artist.
