Jonathan sits in the streets of Mexico City Centro, drawing his surroundings as they happen around him onto large rolls of lino or paper.
Asking street workers permission to include them in the drawing establishes a necessary connection. He reconstructs the space in a performance like casting a net, trying to catch moving people, dogs, traffic, birds and to create tension in a rhythm of lines and shapes, dark and light. In “Circunvalación” and “Hairdressers” he drew on site with crayon and a scraper onto lino. An unexpected physicality evolves through the nature of lino cutting. Greys translate into black or white. Odd figures reveal themselves through printing.
Jonathan studied Fine Art BA at the Slade, 1997 and a Postgrad Diploma at the Royal Drawing School, 2011. He won the RWA Moving Image Research Award 2014 and his animations have been screened at festivals around the world.
He has exhibited widely since 1997 in Spain, the UK, Mexico, India and China, including the Jerwood drawing prize 2010, the 2014 RWA Annual Open Exhibition Bristol and the Museum of X’ian Academy of Fine Art, China 2015.
